Meet the Facial Asymmetry Team

This site is led and medically reviewed by Tongchun Mao, MD, who performs facial and jaw contouring surgery here and who is responsible for the medical content. The other three physicians contribute what an assessment of an uneven face often needs: the center’s surgical standards and revision experience, the soft-tissue and volume assessment that decides whether the cause is fat rather than bone, and the dermatologic diagnosis of skin changes that make one side of a face look different from the other.

Tongchun Mao

Tongchun Mao (毛彤春)

Deputy Director & Head of Aesthetic Surgery · Vice Chief Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending · Lead Physician of This Site

Facial analysis and balance · bone, contour and soft tissue · the bite as a cause of asymmetry

Dr. Tongchun Mao is an aesthetic surgeon at Chongqing West District Hospital, where he is Deputy Director and Head of Aesthetic Surgery in its Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center and the responsible physician for this site. He personally performs more than 700 operations a year, within hospital standards of assessment, anaesthesia and follow-up.

On this site his part is the assessment that decides whether anything should be done at all, and if so at which tissue. He looks at the face at rest and in movement, measures the positions that can be measured, keeps a photographic record so that progression can be detected rather than guessed, and asks about the bite, because a face that is following the teeth will return to its old pattern if the teeth are left alone. Where the asymmetry sits inside the ordinary range he says so, and where the change is recent or progressive he sends it for medical assessment before discussing anything aesthetic. His stated discipline is to balance rather than to match.

Clinical focus

  • Facial analysis at rest and in movement, and the normal range it is judged against
  • Separating a skeletal cause from a soft-tissue one before any plan is made
  • The bite as a cause, and when a dental or orthodontic opinion comes first
  • Measurement and photographic records for detecting progression over time
  • Routes for asymmetry that is new, progressive, or accompanied by weakness

Balance, not symmetry

No option makes the two halves identical, and a face that is too even reads as altered rather than as well. The practical target is a face that reads as even in movement and that nobody studies. That is a smaller change than most people expect, and it is the change that can honestly be delivered.

Shaoliang Wang

Shaoliang Wang (王韶亮)

Director, Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center · Vice Chief Physician, Associate Professor, Doctor of Medicine

Center leadership · surgical standards and complex revision

Dr. Shaoliang Wang is Director of the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team he provides the surgical perspective and the tertiary-hospital backstop — the assessment when an operation is the honest answer, and the hospital-level care for the rare complication that needs it.

Within this site his part is the standard a plan has to meet and the backstop behind it. Where correction involves bone, or where a previous procedure has left the face less balanced than before, that work sits within his part of the service.

Clinical focus

  • Center leadership and multidisciplinary case review
  • Surgical assessment when an operation is the honest answer to descent or excess skin
  • Hospital-based care for the rare complication that needs theatre-level management
Ke He

Ke He (何锞)

Deputy Director & Head of Skin & Laser Aesthetics · Attending Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending

Skin and laser aesthetics · soft tissue and surface

Dr. Ke He is Deputy Director and head of skin and laser aesthetics within the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team her role is the device and injectable assessment, and the honest referral when a problem needs an operation rather than a needle.

Within this site her part is the soft-tissue contribution: assessing whether a difference is volume rather than structure, planning conservative staged treatment where volume is the cause, and judging the result against standardised photographs.

Clinical focus

  • Device and injectable assessment before any treatment plan
  • Staged planning judged against standardised photographs
  • Honest referral when a problem needs an operation rather than a needle
Yongbo Jia

Yongbo Jia (贾勇波)

Deputy Director & Head of Dermatology · Vice Chief Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending

Dermatology · conditions that change one side of the face

Dr. Yongbo Jia is a dermatologist within the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team his role is medical skin assessment — diagnosing and managing pigment and barrier conditions, and treating skin that a device or an injection has irritated.

Within this site his part is the skin condition that makes one side of the face look different from the other, and the inflammatory or pigment changes that are mistaken for asymmetry. These are diagnosed and treated as skin disease rather than corrected as contour.

Clinical focus

  • Medical skin assessment behind injectable treatment plans
  • Diagnosis and management of pigment and barrier conditions
  • Dermatologic care of skin after irritation or a delayed reaction

Start with whether this needs investigating at all

Arrange an assessment. We will examine the face at rest and in movement, measure what can be measured, and say whether this is a variation or a finding before anything is planned.
