If the change is recent, or getting worse

Do not book a cosmetic consultation first. Asymmetry that has appeared over days or weeks, that is measurably increasing, or that comes with weakness of one side of the face, difficulty closing an eye or a mouth, numbness, drooling or a change in speech needs medical assessment. Where any of that comes with weakness in a limb, difficulty swallowing or a sudden severe headache, emergency care is the right route.

Arranging an ordinary assessment

Where the asymmetry has been present for years and is not changing, appointments are made through the hospital outpatient line or through the appointment service described on the appointments page. Say that you are asking about facial balance so that the right clinic time is booked. If you are travelling from outside Chongqing, say so when you book, because the assessment can sometimes be arranged alongside any imaging in fewer visits.

What to bring

Bring photographs of your face from as far back as you have them, in as many different years as possible, because they answer the question of change better than any description. Bring a list of your current medicines and allergies, any previous dental or orthodontic records, and the names of any conditions you are being treated for. Mention any change in your bite, any jaw pain, and whether you chew on one side.

What happens at the consultation

Expect an examination rather than a presentation. The face is looked at at rest, smiling and speaking; positions are measured and recorded; the bite is assessed and a dental opinion arranged where the bite appears to contribute; and photographs are taken in standard positions. You should leave knowing whether what you have is within the ordinary range, what is causing it, and what the options and their limits are.
